This S5000 single-seater hottie debuts this weekend during the Virgin Australia Supercars Championship grand finale Newcastle 500.

Legends John Bowe and Greg Murphy will take turns around the 2.6km street circuit in the Onroak-Ligier chassis, powered by a sealed and snarling 5.0 litre, 560hp V8 Ford Coyote Aluminator donk.   Check your local guides.

The S5000 has been dubbed Australia’s answer to the extraordinarily popular US IndyCar series.    It has a way to go!    But if looks have an input into what attracts youngsters into openwheel racing then the S5000 sure has it covered.     No doubt the cost factor will determine just how successful that is.

The exciting prospect was unveiled today at Sydney Motorsport Park by the series promoter Australian Racing Group.   ARG director Matt Braid, announcing a six event schedule with the 2019 Shannons Nationals, said:

“This is the motorsport category that is going to shake up the industry.   For many years, we’ve been yearning for a local, cost-effective, premier open-wheel motorsport category, and we have no doubt that the S5000 package is the car to deliver what is needed.”

ARG clearly have set their sights firmly on the future.   ‘Cos let’s face it, the Supercars series IS the future.     And the S5000s would have to be a better prospect than the current F3 series, despite the bright young talent that is fostering.

Category manager Chris Lambton confirmed the 2019 CAMS Australian S5000 Championship schedule, with the Shannons Nationals.    “That’s great news all-round,” he said.   “It’s the ground base on which the future of S5000 will be built!”
